But Beautiful: Geoff Dyer and Literary Translator Kong Yalei
The Bookworm International Literary Festival (full schedule here) continues all throughout this week and includes tonight's talk between Kong Yalei, the award-winning novelist, short story writer, and Chinese translator, and Geoff Dyer, whose book But Beautiful: A Book about Jazz was translated into Chinese by Kong. The two will discuss "the experience of having their work rendered in different languages, the translation process itself, and challenges encountered along the way."RMB 60. 6pm. The Bookworm

Seminar: How to Build an Effective Anti-Fraud Program
The European Union Chamber of Commerce teaches individuals and businesses how to avoid asset misappropriation, bribery, and corruption and procurement/accounting fraud, all relatively common economic crimes in China. Recent investigations indicate that one out of every three China-based companies have experienced some form of economic crime in the past two years, making the need for awareness and security measures all the more necessary. Kerry Brown, considered one of the most astute China watchers of the past decade, will discuss the fears arising from China's growing assertiveness internationally and its influence and stature around the world. This talk will assess China's main foreign policy narratives and its plan to create a 'New Silk Road' across Central Asia – one of the biggest infrastructure projects in modern history. Traditions and Transitions: A Walk and Discussion in the Hutongs of Dongcheng
This walk will guide you through one of Beijing’s most distinctive urban features, the hutongs, which have long been at the heart of the capital’s distinctive local culture. Weave through the alleyways of Dongcheng District, once home to some of Beijing’s most fascinating figures, and discuss the history behind each wall as well as what is to become of them in light of the government's ongoing campaign to develop and clean them up. LGBT Event: What You Need to Know About Parenting
This LGBT Center event will discuss and give guidance to the growing number of queer people in China seeking parenthood, which has partly fueled the rapid expansion of commercial overseas surrogacy services. The event will also serve as a platform to talk about some of the challenges that gay Chinese parents face, including how the law prohibits surrogacy and how children born outside of marriage are prevented from acquiring a hukou.
