This Week in Health and Fitness looks at the latest goings on in health and fitness around town so you can live your #bestlife.
After a brief hiatus last week (blame it on a metaphorical sprained ankle), we are back with a grab bag of fitness events to suit all tastes.
First up, to mark the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, the Beijing American Center is holding a two-hour women's self-defense class with a certified instructor who has taught students at universities across the US. Note that you will need to bring picture ID with you to gain access to the Center. Sign up here.
If you're in the market for regular female-oriented self-defense classes, you might want to check out Krav Maga Global Beijing. The fall session of their women-only self-defense course (which we wrote about last month) has just wrapped, but they usually hold another session in spring and have plenty of other regular classes for all levels of experience in the meantime.
Keen cyclists will want to check out this week's Saturday Cycling Escape with Serk. With temperatures dropping, they are moving their rides down from the mountains onto flatter ground, this week embarking on a 90km ride to Tianjin (there will also be a 180km option for serious enthusiasts). Reward your efforts with a discounted buffet at the historic Ritz-Carlton in Tianjin. A one-off pass for the event is RMB 350 (buffet not included), or you can purchase multi-pass packages for their rides. More details about the ride here.
Finally, it's true that health and wellbeing are about more than where you go to the gym and what you put in your body. If you are struggling through a challenging time or facing a situation that is getting you down, there are support groups available around the city. Local NGO CandleX, which focuses on raising awareness for depression and mental illness, offers twice-monthly peer support groups based on sharing and discussion. More details in the event listing or you can contact CandleX on info@candlex.org.
